SUPERNOVAE-Fireworks in the SKY.

(LEFT: A Supernova Remnant named N49 in a galaxy called Large Magellanic cloud)
You all might be knowing whats a star. It's a huge ball of swirling gas which is formed when clouds of interstellar gas gels together due to gravity. In a star, Nuclear Fusion takes place as in a nuclear reactor here.In the star two hydrogen atoms fuse together to form a Helium atom. Now what happens when the star runs out of hydrogen fuel? People might ask whether anything like that could happen?Yes it does and when it does the star dies.

One way of a star death is something called a Supernova.Whats a Supernova, literally it means Super-Nova(new).Sometimes when the star runs out of fuel and ceases to produce energy, suddenly the gravitational energy of the star increases dramatically and the gas layers of the sun collapses and in turn increases the heat of the star to a very high level that a mega-explosion takes place releasing all the layers of gas that had collapsed leading to an amazing phenomena called a Supernova.

A Supernova has a very high energy content being released into space that it causes a huge cloud of the gas layers that was the present in star before its death. Now this gas cloud might lead to another star birth if the gravity pulls the cloud of gas back together.Otherwise the cloud of gas might remain in the sky forming something called a Supernova remnant which is nothing but a cooling cloud of gas.Supernova offer humans a great view of nature's birth and death cycle. But when a Supernova occurs near to planet Earth it could cause potentially disastrous consequences.

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE(Granddaddy of them all)

(LEFT:A file photo of one of HST's images of the Pillars of Creation in The Eagle Nebula).
HI guys so ready for it?????
Lets start....I think you all know whats a Telescope.Yes...an instrument that uses lenses to focus distant objects with good accuracy. As this is most important of inventions in Astrophysics point of view i am dedicating my first blog towards it. So whats a Space telescope all about.Well as the name suggests its a telescope in space. No joke as NASA has already launched several of them. Its a satellite orbiting around earth that acts as a telescope. So naturally a question arises why on earth a satellite in space!Well a space telescope necessarily eliminates one big problem that every ground-based satellite faces....Atmospheric disturbances that rules out the possibility of having accurate observations being made round the clock. So a Space telescope has the freedom to operate round the clock with great accuracy.

Now we will discuss about the most important space telescope till date. The Hubble Space Telescope or HST. Named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, it was launched in 1990 by NASA and the European Space Agency with a view of observing in detail the vast extents of our unexplored universe so as to help scientists understand our universe better.Built at a huge budget of around 2billion USD,the HST has been able to take Astronomy to great heights by capturing some of our universe's greatest phenomenons. It has a very finely grounded mirror that has been able to capture very far away objects, such as distant galaxies and stars to that detail that scientists have been able to study their characteristics almost completely.

The HST captures images as it revolves around the Earth and relays them back to Earth to a ground station which controls every motion of the Hubble using computer based controls. One of the most important images captured by the HST is something called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which is the photograph of the most distant galaxies ever to be observed by humans.
One of my personal favourites is the photograph of something called Pillars of Creation in the Eagle nebulae, which are mega-sized columns of gas where stars are born every second as the name suggests.

This is just an introduction to HST to learn more go this link in wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Space_Telescope.
Also one can visit the official site of the Hubble: http://hubblesite.org or www.spacetelescope.org(you will find amazing videos in this one).

Introduction to Astrolog.

Hi guys and gals,
Welcome to Astrolog.Although the blog is titled Intro to Astrolog,in fact i am taking this chance to introduce myself to all of you.I am Sundar doing my Engineering in a College in chennai. Although due to certain circumstances i had to take Computer Science as my field to specialization i am someone who always wanna be a Astrophysicist or even a Theoretical Physicist. Therefore i am planning to do my masters degree in Astrophysics in any biggg Univ. This blog has been created to help budding Astrophysicists to keep up with the latest happenings in Physics.More importantly this blog is intented for common people to have a better outlook towards this wonderful, wonderful Universe. The sole intention of creating this blog is my interest towards sharing the information i possess and to get some good career guidances from the experts and of course to learn more.

Another important thing is that i need to mention a very important person who has been the sole driving force behind me creating this blog. His name is K.R.R.Premnath ,one of my classmates and a very, very good friend of mine.He has promised me to help through each one of my blogs. He is amazing in A.I and CAD.Also thanks to Sugesh and all my classmates.

As this is the first day i grant a holiday for all. See you all tom with an interesting topic.Good Night.
